Jacksonville Area Genealogical and Historical Society was organized in 1972 and incorporated in 1976. The Society collects data of genealogical and historical nature. Most records cover Morgan County, Illinois and other nearby counties such as Adams, Brown, Cass, Greene, Macoupin, Menard, Pike, Sangamon, Schuyle, and Scott. They also have miscellaneous material on other states, mainly Kentucky, and Virginia. Information include extracts or excerpts from little-known records, including those discovered in the County Archives by the Jacksonville Area Genealogical Society and the Morgan County Bicentennial Commission, such as Morgan County delayed birth records (1858-1877) filed after 1940, the Morgan County Poor Farm Inhabitants (1848-1853) of persons arriving in Morgan County, some of whom were buried in the Morgan County Farm cemeteries, readings from the Hazel Cemetery, Crow Cemetery (also known as Elmore Cemetery), Woodlawn Cemetery (also known as Huffaker Cemetery), Angel Cemetery, records of estate administrations of the probate court in Morgan County (1827-1900), and a surname index to Greene County's war records (1879), an index to applicants to the Experimental Schools (May 1856-May 1868), populous Henderson marriages in Morgan County (1830--1870), Henderson Bible records, a township directory of known cemeteries, death indexes of the Waverly area, some records from mortuaries, funeral homes, coffin records, and others. The Jacksonville area covers West Central Illinois, especially Morgan County, and other nearby townships and territories later were formed into Adams, Brown, Calhoun, Cass, Greene, Jersey, Macoupin, Menard, Pike, Sangamon, Schuyle, and Scott County. Some of the area was were separated from early Madison County ca. 1821. The territory also included areas included in Bond, Christian, Logan, Marshall, Macon, McLean, Mason, Putnam, Sangamon, Tazewell, and Woodford County.
