Our Purpose

The purpose of the Jacksonville Area Genealogical & Historical Society is to foster an interest in genealogy and the history of the region by providing information, instruction, inspiration and help with research. We strive to help members and others develop accurate records of their family's history for the benefit of future generations.

About US

The Jacksonville Area Genealogical and Historical Society is a nonprofit, tax exempt organization that is staffed solely by volunteers. The group survives on donations and memberships. If you would like to join, the dues are $25 annually. We have been able to stay open and increase our library through generous donations. JAGHS was organized in 1972. The group has collected a nice sized library of hard to find documents dealing with local genealogy and history. Some of these include:
     • Family histories
     • A collection of city directories
     • A collection of old phone books
     • A collection of obituaries starting in 1972
     • Census books
     • Marriage records
     • Cemetery information
     • Church information
     • Portuguese collection
     • Various old atlases
     • Jacksonville history
     • Morgan County history
     • Yearbooks from JHS, IC and Mac
     • A sizable collection on Capps Factory
     • Local black history
     • State Hospital information
     • Local Military/veteran information
     • Maps
     …just to name a few!
